(Trans)cend is a photo series that aims to raise social awareness and visibility to transgender individuals in southern Louisiana in the hope that exposure and education will inspire empathy and social action. The work features portraits of specific transgender individuals and shows a variety of different transgender expressions.
The work was made because transgender people are being discriminated against in a more extreme way than other groups on the spectrum. They are a particularly vulnerable group to hate crimes and social aggressions. The more visibility the transgender community has, the more understood and accepted they will be.
